Because what I do is so human
Everyday I approach my students with the sincere effort to exchange information. I value their insight and the knowledge they have acquired from their experiences. I hope they value what I want to teach/share with them also. Here is where I must utilize all I have learned to help me spark their interest, knowing that sometimes it will work, and other times it will send me back to the drawing board. Communication within the classroom is in part rehearsed, planned, but must also be spontaneous, and above all real. A person in the teaching space must be aware of the dynamics of crafting a lesson and also humble and smart to know it will always be a process that gets better with practice and the ability to be yourself. This aspect of relating to students in an honest way,I believe is the glue to the lesson, perhaps a moment of your human self exposed is what they will remember.

To teach one must also be a learner. Learning is enhanced by sharing with others. Openness, and a desire and passion to explore through different lenses this amazing world, I believe is the main motivator for what moves me to learn and to orchestrate lessons where students can also share their expertise and interests with others. Fostering this type of engagement, I believe is at the core of motivation.
Motivation is a topic much discussed. I think that motivation and creativity are essential to "making things stick" and make a lesson "contagious to the point of shifting the 80/20 formula, where 20% of the students do the work and participate. While the 20/80 numbers do not always reflect the reality of our classrooms, there are students in the classroom who are not engaged The secret ingredient seems to be a combination of emotion, honesty and the personal story we can relate to.
I must run to a faculty meeting now, until then. Hasta pronto
