To teach one must also be a learner.  Learning is enhanced by sharing with others. Openness, and a desire and passion to explore through different lenses this amazing world, I believe is the main motivator for what moves me to learn and to orchestrate lessons where students can also share their expertise and interests with others. Fostering this type of engagement, I believe is at the core of motivation.
Motivation is a topic much discussed.  I think that motivation and creativity are essential to "making things stick" and make a lesson "contagious to the point of shifting the 80/20 formula, where 20% of the students do the work and participate.  While the 20/80 numbers do not always reflect the reality of our classrooms, there are students in the classroom who are not engaged  The secret ingredient seems to be a combination of emotion, honesty and the personal story we can relate to.
